2012 CHENIN BLANC Steen op Hout

Wine of Origin: Western Cape
Blend: 100% Chenin Blanc
Barrel ageing: 20% in French oak for six months
Maturation: 5-7 years from date of vintage

Most vineyards were dry-farmed bush vines, although one very special trellised block made the cut. Ripeness levels varied across the spectrum to contribute a range of flavours and textures to the final wine. Once pressed, the free-run juice was fermented in a combination of French oak barrels (20%) and stainless steel tanks (80%). The wines rested on lees for 6 months before blending took place.

Serve at 12 – 15°C. Pair with shellfish; grilled tuna; grilled sardines; lemon and herb roast chicken; vegetable stews; Bobotie – Cape Malay dish of baked savoury mince served with saffron rice; and biltong.

Our Winemakers’ Tasting Notes

Light golden appearance with subtle yet complex array of aroma and flavours. Fresh greengage and apple notes mingle with riper tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango. These are offset by lifted floral notes and subtle oak spice. The entry onto the palate has a bright, mineral freshness, yet remains succulent and juicy at the same time. True to its varietal character, the finish on this Chenin Blanc is positively steady and refreshing.
